Language Requirements for Prescription Drug Labels

If your patients would like a prescription drug label and informational insert in another language, you can make that request to the pharmacy on their behalf per ORS 689.564:

Effective 1/1/2021, the State Board of Pharmacy shall adopt rules to require the following:

  • Patients with limited English proficiency, their provider, or an authorized representative of the patient can request that a prescription drug dispensed by a pharmacy have a label and informational insert in both English and an additional language.
  • Pharmacies must post signage to provide notification of the right to free, competent,
    oral interpretation and translation services for patients who are of limited
    English proficiency.
  • 14 Languages Available: Spanish, Russian, Somali, Arabic, Chinese (simplified), Vietnamese, Farsi, Korean, Romanian, Swahili, Burmese, Nepali, Amharic, Pashtu

Note: The Board may exercise enforcement discretion in recognition of known implementation challenges. Compliance cases related to these rules will be addressed individually per usual Board processes.
